verbal molecules co-mingle
my dear b,
your letter (about puppy accidents, saliva facials, and a shortage of bookshelves)
has been commandeered and read aloud
by my student, a 12 year-old korean girl and consummate desk-loiterer,
who didn't understand what "donut bed" meant
but pressed the syllables out from behind her teeth with enthusiastic reverence.
"i've been getting so much mail from you! it is such a delight" she chirped, each vowel and consonant slightly askew,
and i felt both so far from you in that moment
and so utterly absurdly close, as your words moved through this girl
like she was some exotic ventriloquist dummy or some victim of possession
(either way she was merely the vessel)
and into the air, permeating my eardrums and perforating my heart like a postage stamp.
i wanted to record this impromptu letter-reading on tape and mail it to you to listen to--
so you could share the moment that resulted from that moment you put pen
to paper two weeks ago and half a planet away...
all your verbal molecules layered again and again like paint--
the pigment getting more intense with each stroke.
but i had no means of doing it and this note will, sadly, have to suffice.
i love you exponentially as ever,
s
