sea monkeys, slugs, and the yearning for miss lola d.

i am seriously considering buying a sea monkey aquarium kit. they sell it in the toy section at the lotte mart. i had sea monkeys as a kid and, as i recall, their life span was disappointingly short. oh yes, there was this one heady night of hatching, which i remember witnessing under the magical 1980's glow of 'dallas' emanating from our mamoth wood-paneled tv. but then the brine shrimp (let us tell it how it is, 'sea monkey' euphemism be damned) fantasia was soon replaced by a real-life primordial soup re-enactment. *sigh*

so, how do i know i am indeed ready to take this mighty big step into quasi pet ownership? well... at night when my restless bladder inevitably moves me to spelunk in our cavernous and humid bathroom, i often encounter a nocturnal slug or two lounging regally at the lip of the tub. and the level of bliss i get when i meet these korean slugs is pretty phenomenal--it's like they are my little friends and i always say hello and coo at them (in english though, so who knows if they can even understand me). i even condescended to try and *pet* one the other night in a moment of true transference. (i have always liked slugs and when i lived on vancouver island made a habit of rescuing their majestic banana brethren from the bike path near my apartment. in some way, seeing slugs here in my home makes me feel like there's some continuity in my life--slugs here are not much different looking than slugs in connecticut after all. and having them come out only at night in my bathroom feels comfortingly intimate.) the nights (like tonight) when they are mysteriously absent, i feel a pang of bereftness and like some magic is missing from my life. *sigh*
