church and street
i was walking tonight, alone, at 2 a.m., in huge loops around the snoozing streets of my 'hood for the mere sake of walking. everything is muddy and muted since the weather turned balmy and the snow melted, and my mood felt similarly uninspired. while listening to elliott smith on my new christmas-gifted ipod, feeling ennui most pervasive combined with that sense of i'm-the-only-person-awake-in-this-neighborhood grandiosity, i loitered around the parking lot of a church/rectory, and noticed how the street-lamp-post seemed to mirror the cross on the church's sign. they seemed to be conversing, perhaps discussing issues like secular vs. sacred, symbols and archetypes and the collective unconscious. or maybe the street-lamp-post was merely complimenting the cross on its flashy white paint job? it made me smile:
